Abstract: Mangroves are the most productive ecosystem of earth, generating a wide range of commodities and environmental services. A sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems can assist the livelihoods of millions of coastal people while storing significant quantities of carbon globally and reducing the vulnerability of coastal regions to storm surges and other threats. The area of mangrove forest is reducing rapidly in many tropical countries due to poor governance and increasing demand for coastal lands for development. Arresting the loss of mangroves and restoring degraded mangrove ecosystems are therefore of importance in the present context. The Department of Environmental Sciences under the School of Earth System sciences of University of Kerala in association with Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA), UK, is organising a three day international Conference on Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems: Synergies for Fishery Potential. The conference is convened to promote the conservation, restoration, fishery enhancement and sustainable management of mangrove resources in the tropics. The conference also forms a platform for the students and researchers to present their work before a focused audience and to gain from the interactions and knowledge exchange. The papers being presented in this conference is organized in different themes like Biogeochemistry and Bioloy of Mangrove Ecosystem, Restoration and Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystem and Mangrove Associated Microbes, Fishes and Strategies for Fishery Potential. I take this opportunity to welcome all the delegates for the conference. I extend my sincere thanks to the HoD, Faculty members and students of the department for their support in successfully organising this event. I hope that the rational deliberations and significant exchange of ideas will contribute to the success of the conference.
