Abstract: The Eastern African Seas region is made up of two main geographic areas – East Africa which includes Kenya, Mozambique, Somalia, South Africa and Tanzania and the Western Indian Ocean which includes the islands of Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion (France) and the Seychelles. The region has two recognized Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) – the Agulhas Current LME and the Somali Current LME. Another area, the Mascarene Plateau, is yet to be categorized as an LME. The Eastern African Seas region is part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Seas Programme (the Nairobi Convention) and the Western Indian Ocean forms part of the Indian Ocean Commission.
